Online payments are changing

New regulations on payment services will soon come into effect. The changes will help protect you from fraud as you’ll sometimes be asked to prove it really is you when making online purchases.

There are three ways to confirm it’s you. The quickest and easiest way is using the Barclays app1.

  • The Barclays app - Confirm it’s you in just a few clicks via your secure app. If you don’t have the app, you can download it from your app store2. You can also use the Mobile PINsentry feature in the Barclays app3. You can find this in the ‘Quick Links’ drop-down menu once you have logged in

  • Text message4 - If we have your correct UK mobile number, we can send you one-time passcodes by SMS to authenticate your online transactions

  • Barclays PINsentry - If you have a Barclays PINsentry card reader, you can use it to create a code that proves it’s you. You’ll need to have the card reader, debit card and PIN ready when asked to verify a payment. If you don’t already have a Barclays PINsentry card reader, you can order a new or replacement PINsentry card reader through your online banking or by calling us.

How does it work?

Once you’re ready to pay, enter and confirm your card details as normal. When that’s done, a verification screen will ask you to confirm it is you, using one of the options available to you.

The Barclays app - notification

  1. Choose ‘Barclays app’ and select ‘Next’

  2. We’ll send a secure notification to your Barclays app. Just log in to your app and tap the bell icon at the top of the screen to see the payment confirmation request

  3. Once you’ve confirmed it’s you, your payment will be processed.

How to get ready
You'll need the Barclays app. If you don't have it, download it now.

The Barclays app – mobile PINsentry

  1. Choose ‘Mobile PINsentry’ and select ‘Next’. You’ll see an eight-digit code that you’ll need shortly

  2. Log in to the Barclays app and select ‘Mobile PINsentry’ in the ‘Quick Links’ section

  3. Select ‘Respond’

  4. For security reasons, repeat the verification you use to log into the app

  5. Enter the eight-digit code received in step one

  6. Your Mobile PINsentry will create an eight-digit code. Type this into the ‘Verified by VISA’ window on your screen and click ‘Enter’

  7. Once you’ve entered the code, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the payment.

Text message

  1. Choose ‘Receive a code by text message’ and select ‘Next’

  2. You’ll see a new message on the verification screen telling you that a one-time verification code will be sent to your phone

  3. You’ll receive a text message with the verification code you need to enter into the verification screen

  4. Once you’ve entered the verification code, follow the on-screen instructions to complete your payment.

How to get ready
Make sure we have your up-to-date UK mobile phone number. We can only send verification codes to the number we have stored for you. To update the mobile number we have for you, use the Barclays app, visit us in branch or call us.

Your PINsentry card reader

  1. Choose ‘PINsentry card reader’ and select ‘Next’. You’ll see an eight-digit code

  2. Slide your card into your card reader, chip-end first, and press ‘Respond’ on the keypad

  3. Type your card’s PIN into the card reader and press ‘Enter’. Then enter the eight-digit code given to you by the Verified by Visa window on your screen and select ‘Enter’

  4. Your card reader will display a new eight-digit code. Enter this into the space shown on the Verified by Visa window and press ‘Submit’

  5. Once you’ve entered the code, follow the on-screen instructions to complete your payment.

How to get ready
You’ll need your PINsentry card reader, debit card and PIN ready to confirm it is you making the payment. You can order a new card reader if yours is lost or broken through your online banking or request an accessible card reader by contacting us.
